Grapefruit seeds
Less sick thanks to this miracle extract
Stop a diarrhoea or the flu, heal a skin fungal infection, reduce inflammatory processes in the body and strengthen defences – all this is claimed to be possible with grapefruit seed extract. What is special about this extract and how can you benefit from it?
How does grapefruit seed extract work against bacteria and fungi?
This miracle extract is made from ground seeds and the peel of the grapefruit. Its strong protective power against bacteria, fungi and other disease‑causing pathogens is due to the plentiful bioflavonoids it contains, such as Naringin, Rutin, Quercetin, Hesperidin and others. These substances not only protect the fruit itself but can also be lethal to harmful invaders in the human body.
Grapefruit seed extract attacks the cell walls of harmful bacteria and fungi and causes those cell walls to lose function. As a result, parasites, bacteria and fungi cannot utilise nutrients and die.
This effect has even been observed against hospital germs and is a healthy alternative to antibiotics, which besides killing pathogens can also damage the beneficial gut flora, promote the establishment of fungal colonies and thereby negatively affect the immune system. Grapefruit seed extract helps ensure that the gut flora not only remains intact during treatment but can even improve or be rebuilt. The beneficial gut flora expands and supports the body's defences, leading to increased antibody production that can effectively fight disease‑causing agents.

It is no surprise that grapefruit seed extract is successfully used for various pathological conditions and inflammatory processes in the mouth, throat or on the skin, especially for infection‑related illnesses such as herpes, Candida, colds, flu, stomach flu, coughs and sniffles.
Italian and Polish studies have shown high effectiveness of grapefruit seed extract against the persistent Helicobacter pylori – a bacterium that can cause gastritis, duodenal and stomach ulcers.
Yeast can infect the skin, feet and vagina and even enter the bloodstream and reach internal organs, promoting chronic fatigue – the extract's effect against these problems has also been demonstrated.

- The healing power of grapefruit seed extract was discovered by chance by Dr. Jacob Harich when he noticed that grapefruit seeds on his compost heap barely decomposed.
- Grapefruit seed extract shows its antibacterial effect already at a dilution ratio of 1:1000.
- Research indicates that grapefruit extract exerts antibacterial and antiviral effects against about 800 bacterial and viral strains and a fungicidal effect against over 100 different fungal species.
- The term “grapefruit” comes from English and means “grape fruit”: grapefruit fruits hang on the tree very close together like grapes.
What role do the flavonoids naringenin and hesperidin play?
Studies indicate that grapefruit seed extract can protect the pancreas by preventing inflammation‑related changes in pancreatic tissue. This is due to the flavonoid responsible for the grapefruit's bitter taste, naringenin, which has strong antioxidant and therefore anti‑inflammatory properties.
But this flavonoid can do much more: it helps to tighten vessel walls and reduce micro‑deposits. This is important in the fight against modern lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, insulin resistance and overweight. Naringenin is also beneficial for the blood: it supports the formation of new red blood cells, can help normalise haematocrit, lower elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels and thus contribute to normal blood quality.
The flavonoid hesperidin improves the function of capillaries and veins, supports venous problems and helps lower elevated blood pressure.
Grapefruit seed extract belongs in every home medicine cabinet, especially during times of increased infection risk. It should be noted, however, that taking it can cause a so‑called healing crisis: if very many bacteria, fungi, etc. die at once, a lot of toxins are released too. The body must neutralise and eliminate these toxins and needs certain time and energy for that. During such a toxin load one may feel unwell and suffer from digestive discomfort, headaches and fatigue.
- The daily dose depends on body weight. As a rule, take a maximum of 1 drop of extract per 1 kg of body weight. The daily dose should not be taken all at once but divided into at least 3 doses. When symptoms subside, continue taking it for another week. For stubborn Helicobacter pylori, a course of at least six weeks is recommended.
- Increase the dose slowly. Start with 1 to 3 drops in a glass of water or fruit juice per day and gradually raise the dose to the desired amount. In a healing crisis, reduce the dose and make sure to drink plenty of water. After a few days you can increase the dose again.
- It is important to drink at least 250 to 400 ml of water with each dose to support the detoxification processes.
- For an antiseptic mouthwash, add 1 to 3 drops of grapefruit seed extract to a glass of lukewarm water. You can gargle with this solution three times daily. For hoarseness, gargle with 5 drops of grapefruit seed extract.
- For gum inflammation simply put 1 drop of extract on the moistened toothbrush before brushing. For periodontitis it is also advisable to disinfect the toothbrush after each use with a drop of grapefruit seed extract.
- For a stuffy nose a grapefruit seed extract nasal spray is well suited. Spray into the nose three times a day. Internal use of the extract is also recommended.
- 5 to 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract per portion of shampoo are an effective remedy against dandruff and itchy scalp. Massage the mixture into wet hair and scalp for about two minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
- Grapefruit seed extract can also be used for acne and impure skin. Moisten the skin and massage 1 drop of the extract into the skin with wet hands. Let it sit briefly and then wash the extract off thoroughly. Avoid contact with the eyes.
- For athlete's foot and nail fungus, mix the extract with a body oil in a 1:1 ratio and apply to the affected area. Treat the nails this way every 3 to 4 days. To avoid reinfection, you can add about 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract to the final rinse water when washing laundry.
- A lukewarm foot bath with about 30 to 50 drops of grapefruit seed extract helps treat sweaty feet. Soak your feet for 5 to 10 minutes and then dry them thoroughly.
- Due to its antibacterial effect, grapefruit seed extract is also well suited as a natural preservative for homemade cosmetics such as ointments, creams and toothpaste.
- Use grapefruit seed extract only diluted. This applies not only to internal use but also to application on the skin, mucous membranes or intimate areas. If you are allergic to citrus fruits, avoid grapefruit seed extract or discuss possible use with your doctor. In the eye the extract can cause burning and irritation and should therefore not come into contact with the eyes.
With these tips, grapefruit seed extract can become an important element of your healthy lifestyle!
