How do essential oils affect the skin?

Which essential oils help with impure skin?

For impure skin, certain essential oils can help improve the skin's appearance, soothe inflammation and regulate sebum production. Thanks to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, they provide natural support for skin problems such as pimples or acne.

Tea tree oil is one of the best-known essential oils for impure epidermis. It has antibacterial effects, clears pores and helps reduce skin blemishes. Manuka oil has similar properties, is particularly skin-friendly and therefore suitable for sensitive skin as well. Myrtle and myrrh oils soothe and alleviate redness and irritation. Aromacosmetics: How to use essential oils correctly and safely

  • Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and must never be applied undiluted to the skin. For safe use they should always be mixed with organic vegetable oils such as almond or jojoba. This minimises the risk of skin irritation and makes the nourishing properties of the oils most effective.
  • Depending on skin type, different essential oils can be used in a targeted way. Dry skin benefits for example from wild rose or pomegranate seed oil, while oily skin can benefit from tea tree or lemon oil. Make sure to use only skin-friendly combinations to avoid irritation.
  • The amount of essential oil should always be adapted to the intended application. For massages a 1–3 % dilution is recommended, which corresponds to about 10–45 drops in 75 ml of carrier oil. For facial care products the dilution should be even milder, at 0.5 % (about 3 drops in 30 ml of base oil).
  • A warm bath with essential oils can not only relax but also help prevent colds. As essential oils are not water-soluble, they should be mixed with an emulsifier such as honey, cream or sea salt. Lavender, mandarin or sandalwood oil are particularly suitable for a soothing bath.
  • Some essential oils, including cinnamon, lemongrass and clove, can strongly irritate the skin. In addition, certain citrus oils such as bergamot or grapefruit increase the skin's sensitivity to light and should therefore not be used before direct sun exposure. Use these oils only highly diluted or avoid them entirely on sensitive epidermis.
  • In the sauna, essential oils can provide a pleasant scent experience and help clear the airways. Mix about 5 drops of eucalyptus, sage or a citrus oil with water and pour the mixture onto the hot stones.   • Massages with essential oils can enhance general well-being and relieve tension. For a massage oil, mix about 100 ml of almond or jojoba oil with 15–20 drops of essential oil. Lavender or rose are suitable for relaxation, while rosemary or juniper berry have a stimulating effect on the muscles.
  • During pregnancy certain essential oils, including rosemary, thyme, basil and sage, should be avoided as they can stimulate contractions. For children, essential oils should be highly diluted and are not recommended for infants. Lavender or chamomile oil are gentle alternatives for older children.
  • Essential oils are sensitive to light, heat and air. Store them always in dark glass bottles in a cool, dry place. Some oils, such as sandalwood or patchouli, mature over time and even become more valuable, while citrus oils spoil faster and should be replaced after about a year.
  • Recognise high-quality essential oils by their labelling. They should be 100 % pure, state the botanical name of the plant, the country of origin and the method of extraction. Organic-certified oils guarantee that no synthetic additives or pesticides are present, making them particularly skin-friendly.
