Chlorella
The green super-blood for your health
These microalgae are barely visible to the naked eye, yet they have the highest chlorophyll content of all plants, provide almost all important vitamins, are rich in essential amino acids and are considered a high-quality protein source. How can Chlorella strengthen your health?
What makes Chlorella a nutrient-dense superfood?
From Latin, Chlorella means “little, young green”. This genus of algae is a single-celled organism that includes about 24 subspecies and multiplies extremely quickly in freshwater. Through cell division, one mother alga produces four new algae every 16 to 24 hours.
Chlorella impresses with its remarkable nutrient density: it contains 58% protein, 23% carbohydrates, 9% fat, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin, vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. The protein in Chlorella is easily digestible and has a high biological value. This is important for various building processes in organs and tissues of our body.
This microalga also contains more than 30 fatty acids (including saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), which help keep our body cells stable and at the same time flexible. Capric and lauric acids are involved in killing bacteria, viruses and parasites.

What role does chlorophyll play in Chlorella?
The plant green pigment chlorophyll, which is present in exceptionally high amounts in Chlorella, is credited with many positive health effects. It is no coincidence that chlorophyll is called the “green blood”: its chemical structure is surprisingly similar to that of the human blood pigment haemoglobin.
Chlorophyll can help make our blood cleaner and more vital, so that our blood can better nourish body tissues. Oxygen is transported more effectively to all body cells with the help of chlorophyll, which can support our metabolism.

- Chlorella has existed on Earth for billions of years and is the only microalga that occurs in freshwater habitats.
- The five-micrometre Chlorella is only one tenth the size of spirulina.
- Although tiny, Chlorella is among the highly developed organisms.
- Chlorella is virtually iodine-free and therefore suitable for people with hyperthyroidism.
How does Chlorella support the body's detoxification?
Chlorophyll helps the algae to bind contaminants. Because of this property, Chlorella is attributed a detoxifying effect.
Our liver deals with various toxins every day – whether environmental pollutants, toxic compounds, moulds or other agents. Large amounts of chlorophyll can help protect liver cells from toxins and help eliminate toxins via the gut. In addition, chlorophyll is strongly alkaline and helps restore a balanced acid–base equilibrium.
Why is Chlorella suitable for athletes and people with diabetes?
Chlorella has a positive effect on carbohydrate metabolism: it promotes the transport of glucose into cells, enables faster energy production and is therefore particularly beneficial for athletes. Such improvements in carbohydrate metabolism can also benefit people with diabetes.
Should the cell wall of Chlorella be broken?
Because the cell wall of Chlorella consists of three layers, this alga used to be processed in a special way to break the cell walls. It was assumed that Chlorella could not be well digested otherwise.
Later it was found that Chlorella without broken cell walls is only slightly less bioavailable. Products without a broken cell wall are also less expensive.
Green superfood: how to easily incorporate Chlorella into your diet
- Chlorella is available as capsules, tablets, liquid extracts and powder. Many people prefer capsules because they are neutral in taste and easy to dose. Keep in mind, however, that you are not only taking pure Chlorella but also gelatin, cellulose or other substances used to make the capsule shell.
- Chlorella tablets are made from pressed Chlorella, are easy to dose, almost neutral in taste and typically contain no additives. Chlorella in tablet form is especially practical for travel.
- Chlorella powder has an almost neutral taste, often described as grassy and slightly sweet, and is ideal for smoothies and healthy bowls. The powder contains no additives and should be dissolved in water or other liquids.
- The average daily dose of Chlorella is 3 to 4 g and may increase to up to 10 g if needed. For a detoxifying effect and improved digestion, a dose of 6 g is recommended. For treatment of certain illnesses, a doctor may gradually increase the dosage up to 20 g, but this should be monitored by a physician.
- Start with 2 to 3 g and increase the dose slowly to the desired daily amount. The total intake should preferably be divided into two or three doses. Overdosing may cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or dizziness.
- For children, a maximum of half the adult dose is recommended to stimulate immunity and support development.
- For high blood pressure and to lower cholesterol, take 10 g of Chlorella daily for two to three months.
- Note that while taking Chlorella you should drink at least two litres of still water spread over the day. This is a basic requirement to ensure that bound toxins are effectively excreted and the valuable nutrients are available to your body.
- Pregnant women can take Chlorella as a source of vitamin B12, iron and folic acid and to reduce the risk of anaemia. According to a study, 6 g of Chlorella per day has a positive effect.
- For acne, Chlorella can help as an ointment or cream. Note that Chlorella has a strongly drying effect and may cause skin irritation in very dry skin and in allergic individuals.
- Make sure the Chlorella carries an organic label and has been tested for contaminants. Since Chlorella binds toxic substances and heavy metals, there is a risk of contamination if this microalga is cultivated in polluted waters.
- If you take anticoagulants, consult your doctor. Chlorella may reduce their effect and thereby increase the risk of blood clots.
