Dead Sea salt comes from a unique body of water, the Dead Sea, located between Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. Although it is called „sea", it is in fact a salt lake. What sets this lake apart is that it lies 420 metres below sea level and has no outlet. This makes it the lowest landlocked salt lake in the world.
The Dead Sea is renowned for its extremely high salt concentration of up to 33% compared with other waters worldwide. The Baltic Sea, for example, has a salinity between 0.3 and 1.8%, the North Sea 3.5% and the Mediterranean 3.8%. Another distinctive feature is the low number of microorganisms in the Dead Sea compared with normal seawater, which typically contains between 1,000 and 10,000 microorganisms per millilitre.
Dead Sea salt is mainly composed of water-free salts, including magnesium chloride (50.8%), calcium chloride (14.4%), sodium chloride (table salt, 30.4%) and potassium chloride (4.4%). In addition, it contains numerous trace elements, some sulphate, iodine and a relatively high amount of bromine.
Magnesium normalises the skin environment and improves the microstructure of the epidermis. Magnesium ions reach the metabolically active area of the skin and influence the entire energy metabolism. Potassium, as a basic building block of the human body, regulates the skin's water balance, strengthens its defence mechanisms and has anti-inflammatory effects.
Calcium has an anti-allergic effect, relieves itching and soothes sensitive skin. It helps prevent infections and promotes the skin's balance. Bromine is necessary for the formation of the cyclic hormone AMP, which regulates skin regeneration and normalises the desquamation process. Bromine has a particularly calming effect on the skin and the whole organism.
Dead Sea salt has a wide range of healing effects on the body. In skincare it is often used to relieve conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, because the minerals it contains soothe the skin and improve its natural moisture content. A bath with this salt relaxes the muscles, releases tension and relieves pain, especially for people with rheumatic conditions.
The health of the respiratory system is also supported by the vapours from water enriched with Dead Sea salt and can help with problems such as asthma and allergies. The salt also contributes to the detoxification of the body by promoting the elimination of toxins and stimulating circulation. Last but not least, a bath in Dead Sea salt is stress-reducing and helps lower the general stress level.
Dead Sea salt is used in a wide range of skincare and wellness products and is a popular ingredient in the cosmetics industry because of its beneficial properties.
Bath salt from the Dead Sea can be found in wellness products such as bath additives, which are used for relaxing baths to soothe the skin and relieve muscle tension.
Body scrubs with Dead Sea salt effectively remove dead skin cells and make the skin supple. In addition, Dead Sea salt is used in various ointments and creams, especially in naturopathic practice for the treatment of skin disorders.
