- The German name Schwedenkräuter refers to their origin in Sweden. During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedish physicians and chemists Urban Hjärne and Klaus Samst developed an elixir intended to relieve the suffering of people during the war. The remedy called “Elexir amarum” was soon allowed to be sold in pharmacies.
- Maria Treben brought Schwedenbitter back into public attention almost 300 years after its origin with her bestseller “Gesundheit aus der Apotheke Gottes”. She distinguishes two recipes: the large Schwedenbitter with significantly more ingredients and the small Schwedenbitter.
- A severe skin rash in 1945 led Marie Treben to herbal medicine. Recovery through a tincture of greater celandine moved her away from conventional medications and sensitised her to the healing power of plants. After her recovery she studied herbal medicine independently and devoted particular attention to Schwedenkräuter.
- Today Schwedenbitter is also available in gel and powder form. The gels are applied to the skin; the powder is taken simply by mouth and rinsed down with water.
How does Schwedenbitter support digestion?
Thanks to the minerals, flavonoids and bitter compounds it contains, Schwedenbitter stimulates circulation, digestive juices and blood formation. As an aperitif before lunch or as a digestif after a heavy meal, Schwedenbitter prepares digestion and helps with feelings of fullness or an overly acidic stomach.
Schwedenbitter acts as a natural fat burner and supports not only health but also weight management. The bitters it contains promote a quicker feeling of satiety and enable a more efficient burning of food. Schwedenbitter can effectively accompany diets and help you enjoy meals more mindfully in everyday life.
Which variants of Schwedenbitter exist?
The name “Schwedenbitter” and the associated recipes are neither patented nor copyrighted. This leads to large differences in composition and quality among products offered under this name. In addition, the alcohol content of most Schwedenbitter products is often high, frequently above 30%, so many are better classified as a herbal liqueur rather than as a medicinal remedy.
Due to the alcohol content, oral use of Schwedenbitter is generally recommended only for short periods. Use is not advised for pregnant women, children or (recovering) alcoholics because of the alcohol. People with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases should also not take Schwedenbitter. Alcohol‑free variants are now available.

Warm liquids (palatable — not hot) are generally beneficial for abdominal and pelvic cramps, malaise and colds.

- Prepare your own herbal liqueur! Use a grain or fruit brandy base with an alcohol content of 38 percent. Pour the appropriate amount into a wide‑necked bottle and add the herb mixture. Place the bottle for two weeks in a warm, bright spot and stir the herbs daily. After this time, strain the Schwedenbitter — ready for beneficial use!
